The number of accounted civilian drones with a maximum takeoff weight of 15 grams to 30 kilograms for the year increased by a third compared to 2022, Rosaviatsia reported. As of December 31, 2023, 93,107 drones were registered in the country.
The bulk of drones – 67,394 units – are devices owned by individuals. Legal entities own 25,713 drones. As of December 31, 2022, there were 70,201 UAVs in the database – the number of accounted devices increased by 33% over the year.
The rise in popularity of drones is due to a number of factors. First, they have become more affordable. Secondly, the possibilities of their use have expanded, as technologies in this area are rapidly developing, which allows drones to be used in various fields, for example, for aerial photography, cargo delivery, monitoring of various objects or agriculture.
To register a drone weighing between 0.15 and 30 kg in Russia, you need to apply to Rosaviatsia. The application can be submitted through the Unified Portal of State Services, through the Rosaviatsia’s drone registration portal or by mail. In case of a positive decision, the drone is registered and assigned a unique number. The decision to register an unmanned aircraft shall be made within 30 calendar days from the date of submission of the application.
In total, in 2023, Rosaviatsia received and reviewed 52,387 applications for registration of civil UAVs. 49,911 applications were submitted in electronic form and 2,476 in hard copy. As a result of the review, 26,281 positive decisions were made on registration and 3,375 positive decisions were made on deregistration of UAVs.
In accordance with Russian law, drones are prohibited from being used near airports, over crowds of people, military facilities, state borders and other areas that may pose a potential security threat.
