Long-range aviation of the Russian Air and Space Forces will receive brand new combat aircraft built on new principles in 2024. In 2023, the tasks of upgrading aircraft and receiving new ones have been completed in full, Lieutenant General Sergei Kobylash, commander of the Long Range Aviation (LRA), told the Collegium of the Russian Defence Ministry on December 19.

“We have a big plan to modernise and receive new aircraft for next year. These will be completely new aircraft, on new principles, with new aerodynamic and combat qualities,” the LRA commander said.

He expressed hope that at the next debriefing it will be possible to report on what kind of equipment it is and how it fulfils the tasks already within the Long Range Aviation Command.

At the same time, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu named the acceptance of two Tu-160M missile carriers into the Strategic Air Forces as one of the priority tasks for 2024. Summarising the results of 2023, Sergei Shoigu informed that the delivery of four Tu-160M missile carriers is currently being completed. In total, the Air and Space Forces received 237 aeroplanes and helicopters in 2023.

Yury Slyusar, CEO of the United Aircraft Corporation, said at an expanded board of the Russian Defence Ministry there that UAC plans to increase production of combat aircraft in 2024-2025. “The growth is due to the number of those types that are already being produced, plus new types of aircraft that we are starting to produce. Of course, we believe that the Su-57 aircraft, which is now already arriving and is actively participating in frontline, is the aircraft that meets the needs to a greater extent,” the UAC head said on air on Channel One of Russian TV.
