Within the framework of the test program, the IL-76MD-90A prototype aircraft successfully performed a landing and then takeoff from a dirt runway, the press service of the United Aircraft Corporation reported.

Landing on the ground is nothing special for the IL-76, although it is one of the most difficult elements of combat training for military transport aviation crews. During the approach, pilots must independently determine the aircraft’s leveling height before touching the ground strip, visually select the point of this touchdown, taking into account the landing weight of their aircraft. Domestic heavy transport aircraft have always been designed with the possibility of landing on unequipped dirt and snow runways. The use of unpaved runways for takeoff and landing of such huge machines as An-22 or Il-76 is provided by specially designed multi-wheel landing gear.

The IL-76MD-90A is a deeply modernized version of the IL-76MD aircraft – more than 70% of systems and units have been updated. The aircraft has received more powerful PS-90A-76 engines, and its takeoff and landing characteristics and cruising parameters have been improved. The landing gear has been strengthened, their high safety margin allows to ensure maximum takeoff weight of 210 tons and maximum landing weight of 170 tons. The wing structure of the IL-76MD-90A uses long panels and stressed fasteners, which significantly increases the durability of the structure and ensures the tightness of the fuel tanks.

“These and other improvements allow the carrier to operate on equipped and unequipped airfields, on concrete and unpaved runways, in various climatic conditions,” UAC said.
