During a special military operation in Ukraine, the Su-34 frontline bomber performed the first launch of the hypersonic missile 9-C-7760 Kinzhal. The crew that successfully performed such a task was presented to state awards. This was reported by a TASS source in the military department.

The 9-A-7760 Kinzhal aircraft system with the 9-C-7760 high-precision hypersonic aeroballistic missile has been on trial combat duty in the Russian military since December 2017. The missile is carried by a specially equipped MiG-31K interceptor. But Tu-22M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 frontline bombers were also to be equipped for the Kinzhals.

Earlier it was reported that only modernised MiG-31K fighter-interceptors would use these missiles against targets in Ukraine.

The 9-C-7760 missile is used by the Russian army to strike particularly important targets. It was first used on 18 March 2022. Then it destroyed an underground warehouse of missiles and aircraft ammunition of the VFU in the village of Delyatin, Ivano-Frankivsk region. On 16 May 2023, the US Patriot air defence system comprising a radar station and five launchers was completely destroyed by the Kinzhal in Kiev.

The speed of 9-C-7760 missiles is 10 times the speed of sound, the launch range is more than 2,000 kilometres. The missile is manoeuvrable in all areas of flight, which allows it to overcome air and missile defence systems. It is equipped with conventional and nuclear warheads. The mass of the conventional warhead is 500 kg.
