Schedules and stages of the project on the joint Russian-Chinese heavy helicopter (AHL) are being observed. Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov told reporters.
“The stage is advanced. In terms of all schedules and stages, everything is being observed. <...> Before that there were approaches, planning, sketches. Now the stage of contract execution is already underway,” he said.
Work on the project of a heavy helicopter based on the Russian Mi-26 began in May 2015. At that time, Russian Helicopters and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) signed a framework agreement on co-operation in the development of an advanced heavy helicopter. Russia and China had planned to sign a firm contract for the development of the helicopter in mid-2016. However, the preparation and approval of the contract was delayed by as much as five years – the contract was signed in November 2021.
The AHL (Advanced Heavy Lift Helicopter) will be equipped with a seven-bladed main rotor and five-bladed tail rotor. The maximum take-off weight of the vehicle will be 38.2 tonnes, with a practical ceiling of 5,700 metres. The range of flight will reach 630 kilometres, maximum speed – 300 km/h. The AHL’s payload capacity will be 10 tonnes when the cargo is placed inside the cabin and up to 15 tonnes when it is placed on the external suspension.
