The first prototype modernized strategic missile carrier Tu-160M has begun the program of state joint tests. Tests are carried out by crews of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the developer of the aircraft – PJSC Tupolev. Earlier, in December 2022, the programme of factory tests of the aircraft was completed.
The Tu-160M missile-carrying airplane is equipped with modern weaponry, an electronic warfare system, as well as airborne electronic equipment developed with the use of modern technologies in the field of instrumentation.
The first prototype Tu-160M was created as part of the long-range aviation modernisation programme currently being carried out by PJSC Tupolev. As of 2023, the Air Force had at least 15 Tu-160 missile carriers.
At the end of December 2022, two more Tu-160M strategic missile-carrying airplanes were handed over for flight tests. The first aircraft – serially produced under the reproduction program Tu-160M and the second – the in-service aircraft, which has undergone a deep modernization.
