The creation of Russia’s own long-haul aircraft is planned for 2028-2030. Its development is underway. This was announced in an interview with RIA Novosti by Denis Manturov, deputy prime minister and head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

“We were working with our partners from China on a wide-body, long-range aircraft (CR929 – note: Avia Rossii). Given all the inputs from Western countries, our bilateral project will be amended,” he said in an interview in the run-up to SPIEF, answering a question about the development of a Russian long-range aircraft.

Denis Manturov explained that the joint development of the aircraft will continue, but Russia is not standing still and is creating its own long-range airliner project. The Zhukovsky Institute’s R&D centre is currently researching new technologies and defining the design as part of the ongoing research work.

Answering the question about when the new airliner might take off, Manturov specified that it was a matter of time after 2030. “Probably between 2028 and 2030, but definitely not before,” he added.

MC-21-400 – the future flagship of Russian civil aviation

The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade has not stressed the type of the created aircraft: whether it is a narrow body aircraft (MC-21-400) or a wide body – re-motorized Ilushin IL-96 with composite wing. At the same time Irkut Corporation is working on the MC-21-400 version while Perm is building for it an engine with the thrust of 16,500 kgf.

As for the remotorized IL-96, back in July 2021, then Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that the United Aircraft Corporation plans include the remotorization and complete digitization of the machine. Later, in September, he confirmed the intention to redesign the aircraft for two heavy-duty engines, but this, he said, requires the readiness of the PD-35, as well as a large-scale modernization and development of a composite wing.
