During a recent meeting between Vladimir Putin and Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov, the Russian president was surprised by the foreign name of the Leonardo airline reservation system. Rostec explained why this domestic digital product was given such a name.
“It’s simple. The system is named in honor of Leonardo da Vinci, a great scientist of the Middle Ages. It was he who compiled the first body of knowledge about flying machines – the ‘Codex on the Flight of Birds’. We also know him as an artist, naturalist, writer and inventor. His works belong to all mankind, and his name today is synonymous with the discoverer. In this regard, the choice of the name Leonardo for the first Russian air passenger service looks quite logical,” explained in the State Corporation.
Today Leonardo provides all the functionality required by air carriers and is suitable for different types of airlines – international, regional, charter and low-cost carriers. Since the transition, Russian airlines have already transported more than 44 million passengers using Leonardo.
In a situation of sanctions pressure, when the threat of unilateral disconnection of Western air ticket booking systems is an objective reality, Leonardo has become a reliable alternative, allowing Russian air carriers to maintain the stability of their production processes and avoid the loss of critical data.
