Russian aerospace materials manufacturer ONPP Tekhnologiya has developed a forming process for complex-curvature aircraft glazing that cuts manufacturing time by 15% and reduces material losses.

The Obninsk-based company said the new process is intended for double-curved structural optical components made from acrylic glass. By using an oversize forming method, several downstream manufacturing operations can be eliminated, reducing both equipment requirements and labour input.

The technology will be used to manufacture cockpit side windows for the SJ-100, Russia’s import-substituted version of the Sukhoi Superjet programme. The company said the process maintains the required optical characteristics while reducing production losses.

The development is part of ONPP Tekhnologiya’s expansion of its aircraft glazing production capabilities. The company already supplies glazing for Russia’s MC-21 and SJ-100 civil aircraft programmes and has its own manufacturing processes for acrylic components with complex geometries.

The reduction in manufacturing time could support higher production efficiency as Russian civil aircraft programmes move towards series production. ONPP Tekhnologiya said the new process also reduces the cost of manufacturing complex glazing components.
