The machine tool engineering holding company, STAN Group, has commenced series production of the VMB 800 five-axis CNC machine, designed for machining cast housings used in aircraft and helicopter construction. The new machining centre is capable of efficiently performing profiling of complex-shaped parts where high precision is critical, the company’s press office reported.

The VMB 800 machining centre is equipped with a high-speed spindle motor and a computer numerical control (CNC) system, both developed and manufactured in Russia. The machine also features a zero-inertia hydraulic brake for the rotary axes, of domestic manufacture. This equipment enables high-quality machining of parts such as spoiler actuator brackets, tailplane structural frame members, and other components used in aircraft construction.

To achieve high geometric quality of the machined parts, the VMB 800 machine tool’s design minimises vibration during operation. Wide ranges of feed rates and spindle speeds, as well as a “box-in-box” construction, enhance the stiffness and vibration resistance of the load-bearing system. These technical solutions make the machine suitable for performing complex, high-precision operations.

Previously, STAN Group launched series production of the gantry-type CNC machining centres model SK6P200, designed for machining parts used in the production of modern civil airliners. The SK6P series five-axis milling machines, of modular construction, are capable of machining large metallic workpieces, including wing components up to 24 metres in length. Machines in this series perform more than ten operations, including boring, drilling, tapping, and contour cut-outs.

The launch of series production of the VMB 800 machine tool is a significant step in the development of the Russian manufacturing equipment industry. According to Semyon Yakubov, Managing Director for Machine Tool Engineering and Special Projects at Rostec, this confirms the competitiveness of the domestic machine tool industry and meets the stringent standards required for equipment used in strategically important sectors. Machining centres such as the VMB 800 and SK6P reflect the strengthening of technological sovereignty in Russia’s aerospace industry.
