After transferring the manufacturing of the auxiliary power unit (APU) compartment for the MS-21 jetliner to the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, the assembly of the first unit has been completed in workshop 225, as reported by TG-channel “Notes of Aircraft Builders”.

The VSU is an integral part of the aircraft. It is located in its tail section and is an additional autonomous power source, similar to a small third engine.

Alexey Zimin, Deputy Head of Shop 225, told about the preparatory work preceding the assembly of the AUP compartment. The shop received the necessary equipment and tooling, which were installed on the allocated space. Then the work on creation of design documentation and technological processes began, taking into account all the changes related to import substitution.

After thoroughly working out all the details and components, the plant’s production units manufactured the necessary components. Then the specialists assembled the construction of the APU compartment into a single unit on the slipway. The next stage was the removal of the compartment from the slipway with the help of a rigging group. The structure was fixed on a special cassette for further processing.

Now the compartment will be painted, on-board cable network and indication blocks will be installed. After that, the compartment will be transferred to the final assembly shop, where specialists will mount the unit on the aircraft.
