The Yakovlev AIR-12 light aircraft completed its first flight 90 years ago, marking an early milestone in the development of long-range record aircraft by the Soviet design bureau that later became known for military and civil aviation programmes.
The AIR designation used by Yakovlev’s early aircraft was originally derived from the initials of Alexey Ivanovich Rykov, head of the Soviet aviation organisation Osoaviakhim, who supported Yakovlev’s early work. Later Soviet sources also associated the abbreviation with the English word “air”.
The two-seat AIR-12 was designed in 1936 by the Yakovlev design bureau specifically for long-distance flights and aviation record attempts. The aircraft incorporated several features aimed at reducing drag and increasing range, including retractable landing gear, a streamlined wing design, and provisions for additional fuel capacity in the forward cockpit area.
The aircraft achieved international recognition on 21 September 1936, when test pilot Yulian Piontkovskiy flew the AIR-12 on a non-stop route from Moscow to Kharkov, Sevastopol and back to Kharkov. The flight lasted 10 hours and 45 minutes and covered approximately 2,000 km. The result was recognised by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) as a world distance record for light aircraft.
The AIR-12 was also used for a long-range attempt by pilots Valentina Grizodubova and Marina Raskova on 24 October 1937. The crew flew from Moscow to Aktobe, covering 1,444 km in 7 hours and 23 minutes. The distance exceeded the previous international record set by US pilots, but the achievement was not recognised by the FAI because the aircraft did not carry an official observer.

The aircraft remained a single prototype and was not developed into a production type. However, it became one of the most notable early projects of the Yakovlev bureau, demonstrating design approaches later applied to lightweight aircraft intended for endurance and performance missions.
The AIR-12 featured a lightweight airframe, enclosed cockpits, a retractable undercarriage and a high-aspect-ratio wing with a swept leading edge. The pilot occupied the rear cockpit, while the forward cockpit was intended for a navigator or additional fuel storage during record flights.
The prototype was initially powered by a 100 hp M-11 radial engine with a fixed-pitch wooden propeller. For record attempts, it was upgraded with the 150 hp M-11E engine.
Key specifications of the AIR-12 included a wingspan of 11 m, a length of 7.17 m, an empty weight of 558 kg, a maximum take-off weight of 1,240 kg, a maximum speed of 235 km/h and a cruising speed of 212 km/h.
The subsequent history of the AIR-12 after 1937 remains unclear.
