A domestically produced ozone converter has completed certification testing for the Tupolev Tu-214, extending Russia’s effort to replace foreign-built systems on commercial aircraft affected by supply restrictions.

The unit, developed by Kristall Design Bureau, is designed for the Tu-204/214 family and replaces previously imported equipment used in the aircraft’s environmental control system. Ozone converters reduce ozone concentration in cabin air during high-altitude flight, where atmospheric levels can rise to thresholds considered unsafe for prolonged crew and passenger exposure.

Flight testing was carried out aboard a Tu-214 flying laboratory aircraft in northern latitudes, where naturally elevated ozone levels provide a more demanding test environment. Engineers from Tupolev and Russia’s State Civil Aviation Research Institute evaluated system performance across multiple operating conditions while monitoring ozone concentration inside the pressurized cabin.

According to United Aircraft Corporation, the converter met certification requirements during the test campaign and demonstrated compliance with cabin air-quality standards.

The system is manufactured entirely from Russian-produced components and was designed as a drop-in replacement for earlier foreign-built units. Developers also established a domestic catalytic-coating process required for the converter’s active elements, a capability that could later be applied to additional aircraft programs.

The certification campaign forms part of a broader effort to localize systems on the Tu-214, which has become one of Russia’s priority aircraft platforms amid ongoing restrictions on access to Western aerospace equipment and support services.

Late last year, Russian aviation authorities approved a major configuration update for the aircraft that introduced a fully domestic avionics suite along with several revised onboard safety systems following additional certification trials.
