United Engine Corporation (UEC) continues to develop open architecture hybrid propulsion systems (HPS) based on the VK-650V turboshaft engine. The innovative approach will make it possible to assemble HPSs with an output of up to 1.5 MW from individual components. A full-size four-metre long prototype of such a HPS is being demonstrated at the Innoprom international industrial exhibition, which runs from 8 to 11 July in Ekaterinburg, ODK said.
“Currently, the hybrid propulsion system is undergoing comprehensive bench tests. Completion of development work and the start of serial production is planned in the coming years, depending on the success of the current tests. Since certification of hybrid propulsion systems is a new phenomenon for Russia, Klimov specialists are preparing a certification basis, which will be discussed with the expert community,” commented a representative of UEC at Innoprom to the Russian Aviation website.
Hybrid propulsion systems are planned to be used on transport UAVs, aerotaxis, as well as vertical and ultra-short take-off and landing aircraft. Such hybrid propulsion system can be installed on the Partizan UAV, which is being developed by SibNIA named after Chaplygin, while the development of a HPS based on the VK-650V engine is being jointly carried out by OEC-Klimov and TsIAM named after Baranov.
The use of a turboshaft engine as part of the HPS is explained by the need to use all the useful power to rotate the electric generator. Therefore, VK-650V from the point of view of efficient conversion of mechanical power into electrical power is the best choice for use in hybrid propulsion systems.
The HPS, a demonstrator of which is on display in Ekaterinburg, comprises gas turbine and electric engines, electric generator, batteries and power electronics, which ensures high efficiency and versatility of application.
“One of the key advantages of the GSU is its high fuel efficiency due to the use of two types of engines. In addition, the life of the engine used as part of the GMS can be extended by 20-30 per cent through optimal operation. This approach opens up new opportunities for aircraft, making them more economical and reliable,” added the UEC representative.
Hybrid propulsion systems are considered the most promising for further development of air transport, especially in the field of unmanned systems. Within the framework of the 500 kW hybrid propulsion system project, engine kits, power units and batteries are being developed, which can be combined to create various hybrid propulsion systems with a capacity of up to 1.5 MW.
