On the largest of the islands in the northern part of the Big Kuril Ridge Paramushir will be the second phase of construction of the landing pad for aircraft. This is announced on the website of Glavgosekspertiza of Russia, which issued a positive conclusion after reviewing the design and estimate documentation.

In order to develop small aviation in hard-to-reach areas, the organization of sanitary and emergency flights, the infrastructure, necessary for the implementation of the take-off and landing operations of small aircrafts, is created here.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said on April 13 that 37 airfields will be reconstructed in Russia by the end of 2024. “The volume of reconstruction of the Russian airfield and airport infrastructure is increasing. Until the end of 2024 it is planned to reconstruct 37 airfields. Already in 2023 18 airfield infrastructure facilities will be put into operation,” Khusnullin said on the website of the Russian government.

To solve the problem of the isolation of the Kuril Islands and to create the conditions for the functioning of the year-round, all-season and regular system of transport by sea or by air, a landing site for planes is being built on the island of Paramushir. On the first phase of construction, which includes runway, taxiway and fencing, Glavgosekspertiza Rossii issued a positive conclusion in 2021.

The project documentation provides the second phase of work: the construction of the service and passenger airport building, apron, air traffic control and checkpoints, a set of radio equipment for flights and weather support, placement of lighting equipment with low-intensity lights and other necessary facilities.

“The capacity of the terminal on the Paramushir island will be 35 passengers per hour, or more than 6,000 per year. After the completion of the second stage of construction the landing pad, equipped for instrument approach, will provide the implementation of standard schemes of arrival and departure of aircraft. DHC-6-400 Twin Otter is selected as the design type of the aircraft,” commented the chief expert of Glavgosekspertiza Alla Klyuyeva.

Construction of the landing site on Paramushir is implemented under the state program “Social and economic development of the Kuril Islands (Sakhalin region) in 2016 – 2025”.
