Russian airports served 60.8 million people in the first four months of 2024, an increase of seven per cent compared to the same period in 2023. The increase in passenger traffic is due to steady demand on both domestic and international destinations. This was reported by Rosaviatsia.

Flights within the country served 47.6 million people, up 3.6 per cent year-on-year. This growth can be explained by the improvement of infrastructure and the increased mobility of the population.

Passenger traffic on international routes increased significantly with 13.2 million passengers served, an increase of 21.6 per cent. This increase was due to the expansion of international routes and the return of tourism to pre-pandemic levels.

The growth of passenger traffic at the airports of the Moscow Aviation Hub (MAU) stands out. In January-April, 21.4 million people travelled through MAU, which is 7.2% more than in the same period of 2023. International flights handled 7.8 million passengers, an increase of 18.1 per cent. Domestic traffic also showed growth of 13.6 million passengers, up 1.7 per cent on last year’s figures.

The leaders in terms of passenger traffic growth in the federal districts were:

  1. Central Federal District (excluding UIA): passenger traffic increased by 18.4%, totalling 560,000 passengers.
  2. Far Eastern Federal District: a total of 3.3 million passengers travelled through the district’s airports, 11.7% more than a year earlier.
  3. Urals Federal District: passenger traffic reached 6.1 million people, up 10.2%.
  4. Siberian Federal District: 8 million people were served, representing an increase of 9.2%.
  5. Northwestern Federal District: passenger traffic totalled 8.2 million people, representing a 7.3% increase on last year’s figure.

Rosaviatsia noted that the growth of passenger traffic on domestic routes is supported by the active development of airport infrastructure. One of the priority tasks of the Ministry of Transport and the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) is to ensure transport accessibility and increase mobility of the population. These efforts are designed to improve connectivity between regions and create conditions for further sustainable development of the country’s aviation industry.
