The Romashin Scientific and Production Association “Technologiya” has developed a new technology for the production of radio-transparent antenna fairings for navigation systems used in helicopters. Due to the usage of modern composites it was possible to improve the quality of the work of the airborne radars for more than 10%. The press-service of the enterprise informed about it.

Onboard radars on civil helicopters are needed for navigation and collision warning with ground and air objects. They are protected from external influences by fairings, which must have an aerodynamic shape, be durable and radiotransparent. The fairing created in Technologiya is made of composite material on the basis of silica fabric. Thanks to this it transmits the signal better, which in its turn increases the effectiveness of radars of helicopters and other low-speed aviation equipment.

“The use of advanced materials in the construction of aviation equipment allows us to seriously improve its characteristics. While working on the radio-transparent fairing for airborne radars, Tekhnologiya specialists used their experience in creating similar systems for high-speed aircraft. As a result they managed to increase the quality of equipment performance by 10% and reliably protect it from external influences. Now we are working on the possibility of introducing this development into the production of new Russian helicopters,” said Andrei Silkin, general director of the Technologiya.

The fairing was tested on a special stand with an operational airborne radar. The tests showed that it provides an electromagnetic wave transmission coefficient of not less than 90-92%, which is on average 10% higher than international standards require for such products. The development is a scientific advance of the enterprise and is protected by a patent for invention.
