In the new season of the Russian Premier League, Red Wings Airlines, part of Rostec’s management circuit, will be the official carrier of football club Baltika. The State Corporation recently signed a memorandum with the Kaliningrad region, under which it pledged to support this sports team, Rostec’s press service said.
“The agreement with Red Wings is a special event for Baltika. Previously, the team flew to FNL matches not by charter, but by regular flights, almost always with a connection in Moscow. Thus, each trip to an away match took a lot of energy and emotions from the players and coaches of the team. Now Kaliningraders will make direct flights on the boards provided at their full disposal,” the message says.
Red Wings is one of the ten largest Russian airlines and specialises in scheduled and charter passenger services. The route network consists of more than 100 Russian and international destinations. The airline’s fleet is based on SSJ100 aircraft. The carrier currently operates 20 such aircraft.
In this regard, it is worth recalling that in July 2016, at the Farnborough Airshow and in August at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC, now a subsidiary of Irkut Corporation – Regional Aircraft) presented a mock-up of an aircraft for transporting professional athletes – SportJet by Sukhoi.
The maximum capacity of the cabin is up to 60 passengers and it includes four functional zones: a recovery zone with equipment for physiotherapy procedures, a rest zone for athletes with comfortable conditions for sleeping and monitoring biometric data, a zone for the coaching staff, where the team’s actions can be analysed in an appropriate environment, as well as a comfortable zone for administrative staff. According to Ilya Tarasenko, the president of SCAC at the time, the production of the Sportjet by Sukhoi was planned to start in 2018.
On 6 June 2016, it was announced that the Russian Olympic Committee and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft signed a partnership agreement, where SCAC received the status of the official supplier of the ROC and the Russian Olympic team, and the strategic direction of cooperation between the ROC and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft will be the creation of a concept aircraft for sports teams. The SCAC had planned to prepare specialised aircraft to transport teams participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
However, after 2016, no information on the project of a specialised sports Superjet appeared and nothing is known about the further fate of this project.
