Rosaviatsiya warned about the danger of a volcano eruption in Kamchatka.

On April 7, 2023 at 08:38 Moscow time, an explosive eruption of the Bezymianny volcano occurred in Kamchatka.

The ash cloud shifted to the southeast of Kamchatka. The height of the ash column eruption reached up to 12 km. This eruption was assigned the “red” (maximum) danger code on the ICAO scale. The volcano’s activity posed a danger to domestic and international flights, according to Rosaviatsiya.

In connection with this, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise State Corporation for Air Traffic Management in agreement with Rosaviation in accordance with ICAO international standards issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to the flight crews in order to ensure flight safety, which indicated to take into account the features of this natural phenomenon when choosing flight routes and proposed to use alternative routes through the territory of Russia.

Air traffic control authorities of the Russian Federation ensured the passage of 23 aircraft from China, India, and other Southeast Asian regions, flying to North America and back.

“The Russian Federation ensured the safety of flights for 12 foreign airlines, the main ones being Air India, Cathay Pacific, and China Southern,” Rosaviatsiya said in a statement.
