A Russian-developed Digital Automatic Terminal Information Service (D-ATIS) for transmitting meteorological and aeronautical information to pilots has completed testing and is ready for nationwide implementation. This announcement comes from Rostec State Corporation’s press service.

The development was undertaken as part of an import substitution program to maintain operational efficiency and data quality for weather conditions, runway status, navigation information, and other essential flight data.

“The D-ATIS service deployment enables crews to receive updated reports from air traffic control services within seconds of their generation, virtually anywhere in the world and at any distance from the destination aerodrome. This capability allows flight crews to prepare for approach and landing procedures at their destination airport well in advance,” the statement reads.

Prior to March 2022, air-to-ground information exchange across Russian territory for domestic and foreign airlines relied on foreign solutions from Swiss company SITA and American company ARINC. These companies also served as service providers for digital transmission of aeronautical text messages within Russia. In 2020, major Russian carriers tested the D-ATIS service at Pulkovo, Strigino, Vnukovo, and Kurumoch airports. Aeroflot proposed implementing the service at 14 major airports nationwide.

Currently, following the roadmap approved by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya), the transition to fully Russian digital technologies is underway. Digitalization of air-to-ground data exchange enhances flight safety, reduces controller workload, and ensures the domestic aviation industry’s independence from foreign technologies and services.

The project was implemented with participation from the State ATM Corporation, system integrator and air-to-ground data transmission network operator Infocom-Avia, and leading Russian aviation equipment manufacturers including Almaz, NITA Firm, and Azimut Production Company (part of Rostec). Through joint efforts of these organizations, service validation was conducted, with phased rollout of the Russian D-ATIS system planned across the entire country.
