The 1st rank Admiral Gorshkov frigate has practised tactical methods of searching and tracking enemy submarines in the Atlantic Ocean using the Ka-27PL anti-submarine helicopter, the Russian Defence Ministry’s Department of Information and Mass Communications said.
The Project 22350 multipurpose strike ships, to which the Admiral Gorshkov belongs, are designed to operate in the far sea and oceanic zone. They are designed to destroy surface ships and enemy surface facilities, as well as for sentry service, patrolling and protection of sea communications, anti-submarine and anti-aircraft defence.
The Defence Ministry said in a statement that the Ka-27PL crew, being at a distance of more than 50 kilometres from the ship, carried out a set of measures on visual, radar, magnetometer and hydroacoustic search for submarines.
“The search was carried out using regular radio equipment and the helicopter’s onboard hydroacoustic station. Also during the flight shift, the crew of the ship’s Ka-27 helicopter performed landings on the frigate’s helipad on the move,” the Russian Defence Ministry’s press service said.
The pilots’ training was of a planned nature. A total of five landings and takeoffs from the frigate deck were performed. The Ka-27 crew showed high skill and ability to competently analyse the information coming from the navigation devices of the helicopter and the ship.
The flights involved the personnel of the aviation group and the ship’s crew providing the flights, during which reconnaissance was also carried out to reveal the air and surface situation along the route of the ships’ detachment, the Defence Ministry added.
