The 12th Central Research Institute of the Russian Defense Ministry has patented a helicopter-type autonomous kamikaze drone designed to defeat enemy manpower and strongholds using VOG-17 ammunition. This is reported by TASS with reference to the security document.
“One of the features of the drone is its immunity to electronic warfare means, which provides it with additional advantages in the conditions of combat operations. The design of the autonomous drone has a cylindrical shape and is based on a coaxial layout, including two main rotors with skew automatons,” the agency said in a statement.
The coaxial layout allows to abandon the steering propeller and thereby reduce the UAV’s mass, increase its maneuverability and improve controllability, which together provides the drone more effective performance of combat missions. In the lower part of the cylindrical body is placed a munition for which a retention device is provided for secure attachment.
It follows from the description of the patent that the purpose of the invention is a new device that allows a small-sized UAV, not controlled by an operator, but moving autonomously according to the specified target coordinates, to deliver small-caliber ammunition to the place/object of destination in the conditions of fulfillment of the combat task of defeating enemy personnel and stationary firing means – strongholds. The equipment of the kamikaze drone includes a microprocessor, means of laser terrain scanning and a USB drive with data on terrain and targets.
“It provides autonomous flight without operator’s participation by means of independent orientation of the UAV in space according to the topological map and impossibility to influence it by means of suppression of radio control signals and satellite navigation of the enemy,” the developers emphasize.
When the drone reaches the specified coordinates, its LIDAR sensors scan the terrain to detect potential targets. After their detection, the microprocessor initiates a command for high-speed dive of the drone with a munition on the target. This allows the drone to effectively hit the target with high accuracy and minimal time.
In addition, the Novosibirsk Region has developed a multifunctional unmanned twin-engine airplane-type drone with a wingspan of 220 cm (pictured). Depending on the configuration, the UAV can fly at a distance of more than 200 km, with a flight altitude of about 2000 meters. The UAV’s cruising speed is more than 80 km/h, if it is used as a kamikaze drone, it can reach a speed of 160 km/h while diving on the target.
The UAV is capable of performing various tasks, including reconnaissance, creating decoys for enemy air defense and kamikaze drone functions. Developers from the Novosibirsk region together with representatives of the People’s Front’s Kulibin Club have already conducted range tests of the new device for its transfer to the special operations zone in Ukraine.
