Yakovlev, a subsidiary of Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), has completed the winter phase of certification flight and ground testing for the SJ-100 regional jet (tail number 97023) and the MC-21 narrowbody (tail number 73055) in the Komi Republic. The campaign was conducted from Syktyvkar Airport in northern Russia.
SJ-100: Air Data System Corrections and Systems Evaluation
Under a supplemental certification test program, flight crews evaluated aerodynamic correction factors for the aircraft’s air data pressure probes across multiple altitude bands. Engineers simultaneously assessed integrated aircraft system performance.
The aircraft returned to its Zhukovsky test base on Feb. 17.
MC-21: High-Latitude Operations and Inertial Navigation Validation
The MC-21 arrived in Syktyvkar on Feb. 16 and completed two flights on Feb. 17–18, lasting 5 hr 30 min and 6 hr 10 min, respectively. The program included validation of air data system corrections and performance checks of the inertial navigation system (INS) during high-latitude operations.
Syktyvkar was selected for its stable winter weather patterns and relatively uncongested airspace. Compared with the constrained Moscow airspace environment, the location enabled extended cruise segments at defined flight levels and speed regimes.
On Feb. 19, teams conducted ground-based evaluations of maintainability and operational compatibility for import-substituted systems using standard ground support equipment (GSE) available at line stations. The tests verified procedural timing, system accessibility, and interoperability with non-home-base infrastructure.
The MC-21 returned to Zhukovsky on Feb. 20 via a routing across the Arctic region, including a turnaround near Sabetta. The ferry flight provided additional INS performance data under polar navigation conditions.
The Komi campaign forms part of the broader certification program for both aircraft, which includes flight-test validation, onboard equipment assessment, and demonstration of compliance with airworthiness requirements across an expanded operating envelope.
