Russia’s State Research Institute of Aviation Systems (GosNIIAS) has upgraded its “Electronic Bird” hardware-in-the-loop integration facility to support advanced testing of avionics systems for the MC-21 airliner.
The upgraded facility incorporates a radio-frequency systems simulator designed to replicate the operation of aircraft surveillance and navigation equipment before flight testing. The system provides an integrated test environment for validating avionics solutions during aircraft development and certification activities.
The upgraded capability allows engineers to model target trajectories, surveillance messages, transponder responses, digital data flows and radio-frequency signals. It can reproduce complex operational scenarios, including high-density traffic environments, multiple target tracking, and constrained approach and departure profiles.
GosNIIAS is using the facility to support development and evaluation of collision avoidance technologies based on the Airborne Collision Avoidance System X (ACAS-X) concept. The institute presented its research approach and experimental architecture for next-generation navigation and surveillance systems at the IV International Interagency Scientific and Technical Conference on Space Technologies.
The “Electronic Bird” facility is also being used in work on the MC-21-310’s domestically sourced avionics suite. GosNIIAS and Yakovlev are applying the upgraded system for ground-based certification testing required to support expansion of the aircraft’s type certificate.
The upgrade forms part of the broader integration and validation effort for the Russian-configured MC-21-310, which is undergoing certification activities ahead of entry into commercial service.
