Tests of the PD-35 engine are scheduled for the beginning of 2024, Alexander Inozemtsev, Deputy General Director of ODK JSC for management of Perm Motors NPK, said at the Perm Engineering and Industrial Forum.

“The most grandiose project of our country is the PD-35, which we will probably show to the whole world on tests in the first quarter of 2024. It will be an event that will happen for the first time in our country,” he said.

The PD-35 engine belongs to the family of fifth-generation turbojet engines and is designed for use on wide-body passenger and heavy transport aircraft. Its fan diameter is 3.1 metres and thrust is 35 tonnes. The PD-35 gas generator has already passed the tests and in the future will become the basis for the creation of engines in the thrust range from 24 to 38 tonnes.

Engines in size and thrust similar to the PD-35 have not been created in Russia before. In the future, it may be offered to the Chinese aircraft corporation COMAC as an alternative powerplant for the C929 wide-body aircraft. It is also assumed that the PD-35 may serve as an impetus for the remotorisation of the Il-96-400M passenger aircraft into a twin-engine variant, as well as replace the Ukrainian D-18T on the AN-124 freighter.
