Russian air carriers were able to significantly increase the volume of passenger traffic in 2023, demonstrating a 10% growth compared to the previous year, Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said.
“According to operational data, Russian airlines carried 105 million passengers in 2023, which is two million passengers more than planned. Compared to 2022, the growth in traffic was more than 10 per cent,” the press service of the department quotes the minister as saying.
Vitaly Savelyev noted that this result was possible due to effective measures to support the aviation industry, adopted by the government, as well as the growth of domestic tourism.
Domestic traffic showed significant growth, which is due to the increased demand for travelling within Russia against the background of restrictions on international flights. Airlines increased flight frequencies and introduced new destinations to meet the needs of the population. Destinations to resorts in the Krasnodar region, Moscow, St Petersburg, Kaliningrad and Baikal were particularly popular.
In 2022, amid anti-Russian sanctions hitting aviation, passenger traffic fell 14 per cent to 95.2 million people. In 2023, three air travel subsidy programmes were operating, with a combined funding of RUB 25 billion. The programmes will continue to operate in 2024.
According to the comprehensive programme for the development of the aviation industry, in 2023 the passenger traffic of Russian airlines was expected to reach 103 million people, of which 82.4 million were carried within Russia. For 2024, the programme envisages a passenger traffic of 104.5 million people, of which 83.6 million passengers should be carried on domestic airlines.
Earlier, the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia), Dmitry Yadrov, said that in 2023 Russian airlines carried more than 103 million passengers, which exceeded the expectations of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
