A batch of Mi-8MTV-5M military transport helicopters has entered service with the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet aviation units. The aircraft were built at the Kazan Helicopter Plant and delivered as two airframes equipped with the L-370E8 Vitebsk self-protection suite, the Ministry of Defense said.

The crews ferried the helicopters from Tatarstan to their home airfield over a distance of more than 2,500 kilometers. The flight included nighttime segments and landings in low-visibility conditions, according to the ministry’s Department of Mass Communications.

The MoD noted that the new configuration offers improved ergonomics for flight crews. The Mi-8MTV-5M features more powerful engines, upgraded avionics, and a modernized autopilot that reduces pilot workload, particularly during night operations. The cockpit and onboard systems can now be warmed up without starting the engines — a significant benefit for operations in cold climates.

The helicopters are equipped with the L-370E8 Vitebsk self-protection suite featuring a multi-element architecture. The system integrates three L370-5 laser jamming units produced by the Strela enterprise. These stations generate directed electro-optical interference against infrared seekers of AIM-9M/X air-to-air missiles and the UV/IR seekers of FIM-92C MANPADS. They work in conjunction with four L370-2 ultraviolet warning sensors developed by the GIPO research and production association. The sensors detect missile launches and feed targeting data to the countermeasures system. Two UV-26 dispensers release infrared decoy flares to disrupt missile guidance.

The Mi-8MTV-5M’s configuration enables troop airlift, cargo delivery, and fire support missions. The onboard equipment suite is designed for all-weather, around-the-clock operation, including areas with limited navigation visibility. Additional systems support low-altitude maneuvering and escort missions.

The delivered helicopters expand the Northern Fleet’s transport aviation capabilities. As flight activity intensifies across Arctic regions, rotorcraft able to operate in low temperatures and extended darkness are becoming increasingly important. The Mi-8MTV-5M upgrade strengthens operational resilience under these conditions. Higher available power, an expanded countermeasures suite, and modernized avionics provide a more adaptable platform for missions in northern latitudes.
