On February 25th, the grand opening of the new terminal at B.V. Volynov International Airport in Novokuznetsk took place. The ceremony was attended by Oleg Deripaska, founder of the “Volnoe Delo” foundation, Kuzbass Governor Ilya Seredyuk, Managing Director of the Airport, Kirill Ermakov, and legendary cosmonaut Boris Volynov, after whom the airport is named.

The inaugural flight, Aeroflot SU1540 from Moscow, marked the symbolic commencement of operations at the new terminal. Passengers were greeted with traditional Shorian ceremonies and presented with commemorative gifts. From February 26th, the airport will handle all domestic departures and arrivals through the new terminal building.

The new terminal is capable of handling up to 1.7 million passengers per annum, a five-fold increase over the capacity of the old building. The terminal footprint has been significantly expanded, and its interior reflects the cultural traditions of Gornaya Shoria, creating an atmosphere evocative of the Siberian taiga. Particular attention has been paid to passenger comfort, with the terminal equipped with three air bridges (jet bridges), 13 check-in desks, six escalators, and 15 lifts. Also commissioned is Russia’s first automated ski equipment loading system, simplifying the transport of kit for tourists heading to the Sheregesh resort.

The new terminal’s infrastructure incorporates an enhanced pre-flight security screening system, boosting passenger safety and security. For families with young children, a dedicated family zone is provided, complete with kitchen facilities, sanitary facilities, showers, a play area, and baby changing units. These provisions are designed to ensure comfort for all categories of passengers, including those travelling with children or sports equipment.

Novokuznetsk Airport plays a pivotal role in the development of the region’s tourism potential, serving as the gateway to the popular Sheregesh ski resort. In April, the traditional GrelkaFest festival will take place here, with Aeroflot acting as a partner. The airline will provide a voucher for a free flight to any destination within Russia as part of the festival’s prize fund.

Aeroflot has operated services between Moscow and Novokuznetsk since 2013, carrying over 1 million passengers in that time. In 2024, passenger numbers increased by 23% compared to the previous year, reaching 150,000. The opening of the new terminal will not only improve the passenger experience but will also contribute to further passenger growth, strengthening the airport’s position as a vital transport hub in Siberia.
