Amid reports of external interference with the Embraer E190 aircraft that crashed on 26 December in the vicinity of Aktau Airport in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the airline AZAL is suspending flights from Baku to ten Russian airports from 28 December. Air travel is being interrupted to Mineralnye Vody, Sochi, Volgograd, Ufa, Samara, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, Grozny, Makhachkala and Vladikavkaz.

“This decision, made in accordance with the State Civil Aviation Administration of Azerbaijan, is based on the preliminary results of the investigation into the crash of the Embraer 190 aircraft operating flight J2-8243 Baku-Grozny of Azerbaijan Airlines, due to physical and technical external interference and takes into account potential risks to flight safety,” stated a press release from Azerbaijan Airlines.

The suspension will be in effect until the final investigation is complete. For safety reasons, it has been decided to suspend flights by other airlines to the specified destinations, including Grozny and Makhachkala, the press service added.

Passengers on AZAL flights to the specified Russian cities and back, who are unable to use the airline’s services due to the current situation, have the opportunity to receive a full refund without penalties or to rebook their tickets.
