Yak-130M Flies for First Time on AI-222-25 Engines

The Yak-130M advanced trainer has completed its maiden flight powered by a pair of AI-222-25 turbofan engines.

The aircraft represents a modernised configuration of the baseline Yak-130, with upgraded avionics, a new radar and an expanded weapons integration suite covering air-to-air and air-to-surface roles.

The AI-222-25 engines, each rated at 2,500 kgf thrust, are produced by UEC-Salyut and have been in service on the Yak-130 since the late 2000s. The engine entered serial production following state acceptance trials, with production fully localised in Moscow during the mid-2010s following the disruption of Ukrainian supply chains.

Within United Engine Corporation (UEC), the AI-222-25 programme has been used as a platform for digital engineering implementation. A digital twin of the engine has been developed in cooperation with CIAM and the Moscow Aviation Institute using the CML-Bench environment developed by Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University.

According to UEC, the model incorporates several thousand digitised components of the production engine and is used for simulation of design changes and assessment of in-service modifications.

The digital modelling framework is applied to support derivative development of the AI-222-25 and associated modernisation work, enabling virtual validation of engineering changes and reducing reliance on physical test cycles.

Rostec has stated that the Yak-130M constitutes a substantially upgraded aircraft compared with the baseline configuration, with enhanced mission systems and expanded combat capability beyond its original training role.
