PD-8 Turbofan Completes Type Certification as Russia Advances Indigenous Regional Engine Programme

Russia’s aviation regulator has issued a type certificate for the PD-8 turbofan developed by United Engine Corporation, formally closing its certification campaign and clearing the engine for series production.

The approval confirms compliance with airworthiness standards and declared performance specifications, marking a key milestone for integration into Russia’s next-generation civil aircraft.

The PD-8 is intended to power the reconfigured SJ-100 regional jet and replace Ukrainian-supplied D-436TP engines on the Beriev Be-200 amphibious aircraft.

The development and test programme accumulated more than 6,500 flight and ground test hours, covering icing, low-temperature operations, wet runway performance and off-design flight conditions.

Production is being prepared within a distributed manufacturing structure under United Engine Corporation, with UEC-Saturn acting as the lead integrator for serial production and module assembly.

Officials state the engine incorporates around 25 advanced technologies and approximately 17 new engineering solutions, with increased reliance on domestically sourced materials and components.

Beyond the SJ-100 and Be-200, certification enables further derivative development, including higher- and lower-thrust variants. Concepts include a roughly 10-ton thrust class engine for business aviation and the PD-8V turboshaft for heavy-lift helicopters such as the Mi-26.

The certification removes a key constraint for SJ-100 programme development and restores the technical basis for Be-200 production, which had been limited by the absence of a certified domestic engine option.

Longer-term implications include potential reassessment of earlier transport platforms, subject to economic viability and aircraft-level programme decisions.
