High-latitude expedition “Barneo-2023” completed in the Arctic

The Arctic scientific expedition to the Barneo ice camp near the North Pole (89°16.12′ N, 130°22.95′ E), which started on April 1, 2023 from the Cape Baranov landing site in Krasnoyarsk Territory, was safely completed on April 24, 2023. The expedition was supported by two helicopters Mi-8T of the airline AeroGeo and an aircraft An-72 of the Russian Defense Ministry, said the Federal Air Transport Agency.

On April 2, the parachute instructors Artyom Korennov and Vasily Kuzin as a part of the advanced group made a tandem jump at the North Pole. They delivered the bulldozer driver mechanics to the ice site. The next day two IL-76 flights from Murmansk landed machinery, fuel and equipment. The main task, which was solved by the advance team, was to clear the ice runway and receive An-74 planes with the main body of the expedition.

The specialists of Rosaviatsia, Krasnoyarsk and North-West interregional territorial administrations of Rosaviatsia, and Rosaviatsia subordinate organizations were involved in air transportation support of the high-latitude Arctic expedition in the Arctic Ocean: Krasnoyarsk Airports and State Air Navigation Corporation, Russian Ministry of Defense, Aviamettelecom of Roshydromet and AeroGeo Airlines.

The expedition was preceded by thorough preparation. Special instruction on the preparation, organization and execution of flights to serve the high-latitude expedition Barneo-2023 in the Arctic, the crews and the aircrafts of AeroGeo, involved in the expedition support, have been prepared in advance, a permanent meteo-support was provided. Also specialists evaluated the readiness of the runway and infrastructure of the landing site at Cape Baranova of Bolshevik Island to receive aircrafts of An-72/74 type.

During the period of the Arctic expedition Krasnoyarsk Department of Air Transport of Rosaviatsiya had an increased control over aircrafts traffic, services of Khatanga airport, branch of Aeronavigation of Central Siberia of State Corporation on Air Traffic Control and other subordinate organizations provided uninterrupted operation of the expedition. And the crews of search and rescue aircrafts of KrasAvia, which are on duty at Khatanga airport and Unga landing site at Cape Chelyuskin, were put on high alert.

“The organization of air transport support for the Arctic expedition to the Barneo ice camp in difficult climatic conditions was carried out at a high level.
