Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinburg is preparing to develop dedicated maintenance infrastructure for Russia’s MC-21 passenger aircraft as local carrier Ural Airlines moves towards introducing the type into its fleet.
The airport operator, Airports of Regions, and Ural Airlines have signed a memorandum covering the construction of a specialised aircraft maintenance hangar. The facility is intended to support airworthiness management and technical servicing of Russian-built passenger aircraft, including the MC-21.
The planned complex will require an estimated investment of RUB4 billion and will cover approximately 15,000 m². The main hangar will account for around 8,000 m², with a further 6,000 m² allocated for storage and support facilities. Entry into service is scheduled for 2032–2033.
The project forms part of preparations for the introduction of the MC-21 at Ural Airlines, which is considering an initial acquisition of 10 aircraft. Chief executive Kirill Skuratov said the airline is evaluating firm contracts and will assess further procurement options after receiving the initial batch.
Ural Airlines is one of Russia’s largest regional carriers and operates a mixed fleet that includes Airbus A320-family aircraft and Russian-built Superjet 100 regional jets. The planned MC-21 introduction would support the carrier’s transition towards domestically produced narrowbody aircraft as Russia seeks to reduce reliance on foreign-made commercial aircraft.
The new maintenance facility will become part of Koltsovo’s broader technical infrastructure development programme. The airport operator said the project is intended to strengthen regional aviation capabilities and provide additional support for Russian aircraft operating from the hub.
