The Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI) performed a series of studies aimed at improving the flight and performance characteristics of the SSJ-New passenger aircraft. The research was conducted under the performance specifications of Irkut Corporation Branch “Regional Aircraft”.

The research program included a wide range of tasks, including the strength aspect. The Institute’s scientists performed a number of calculations and experiments to estimate the service life of the tail boom and stabilizer, as well as the engine mounting area on the wing. To analyze the dynamic loading of aircraft structure on the takeoff and landing modes in TsAGI tests were carried out in a wind tunnel using a dynamic-like model in a configuration close to the “nature” in the landing. The institute also developed recommendations for the design of the aircraft for a specified service life, taking into account the experience of testing and operation of the SSJ100 aircraft.

The aviation science center also solved a number of issues related to the SSJ-New integrated control system. This includes research on load reduction in airborne conditions and study of the aircraft behavior in critical conditions and support of the SSJ-New SCS design works. In particular, the scientists assessed the damageability of aircraft wings with the prototype of ACS algorithms, including algorithms for improvement of stability and controllability and algorithms for load reduction under the influence of atmospheric turbulence in a typical flight.

Other tasks performed at TsAGI under the SSJ-New program include determining aeroacoustic loads and ways to limit vibrations for mechanization elements, and fuselage sections, as well as studies of the air signals system.

“For TsAGI, being a scientific partner of the SSJ-New program is a responsible and big job, which involves our specialists in almost all areas: aerodynamics, strength, flight dynamics, etc. Our cooperation with Irkut Corporation and particularly with the Regional Jet Company is an example of an effective union of science and industry. Such interaction drives the development of aviation, which is one of the strategically important industries,” said Kirill Sypalo, Director General of TsAGI and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
