At the end of 2022 the number of regular flights between the regions of Russia without landing in Moscow reached 50 percent of the total volume of domestic air routes. It is reported by the “Business Petersburg” with reference to the Integrated Interagency Information and Statistical System. Such indicator was planned to achieve only by 2024.

The State Corporation for Air Traffic Control reported that now the registry includes 229 airfields and five heliports for civil aviation, of which 79 airports are open for international flights. Also in Russia are used about 2430 landing sites. For comparison, at the beginning of 1990s there were 1450 airfields in Russia, their number was reduced by more than 1000 for 30 years, said the State Corporation.

In 2022, the majority of regional airports showed positive passenger traffic dynamics relative to 2021. During the year, Russian airports served 185.4 million passengers, 9% less than the same period in 2021 (204.8 million passengers). A significant decrease in passenger traffic was recorded only at major international airports, such as Moscow and St. Petersburg airports, and this was primarily due to the closure of international connections with unfriendly countries.

According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the number of passengers carried by Russian airlines in 2022 was 95.21 million people, which is 14.21% less than the results in 2021. With restrictions on flights to 11 airports in the South and Central Russia, 77.73 million passengers were carried on domestic airlines, a decrease of 11.17% compared with 2021.

The Association of Air Transport Operators believes that the passenger traffic of Russian airlines in 2023 may recover to the level of 2021, when 111 million people were carried.
